The review of The Nautical Institute's not-for-profit DP Operator training scheme has concluded. For full details of the new scheme download the following document (January 2016 version 1.2): DP Training Certification Scheme

Marine Vocational Qualifications

From 1st August 2016, holders of a Marine Vocational Qualification(MVQ) are able to start the Induction course at an approved DP training centre if their certificate is listed in the below document.

MVQ - Issuing Authority - V1.2 - November 2016

If the certificate is not listed, those wanting to start the scheme will need to complete the approval form and email it with the relevant documents to dp@nautinst.org.

Revalidation of DP Certificates

From 1st January 2015, DP certificates are required to be revalidated every 5 years. The Nautical Institute strongly recommends that DPOs who already hold the NI DP certificate log their DP sea time in their NI and/or IMCA logbook. Confirmation letters are required for revalidation of DP sea time gained after 1st January 2014.

The revalidation will be phased as below:

2015: Revalidation of certificates issued from 1984 to 2002, 2009 and 2010
2016: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2003-2004 and 2011
2017: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2005-2006 and 2012
2018: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2007-2008 and 2013
2019: Revalidation of certificates issued in 2014 and so on

The application and documents should be sent to the Nautical Institute in the same month that the DP certificate was issued.

For more instructions on how to proceed with the revalidation of DP certificates, please click DP Help page> Revalidation

Guidance to Masters when signing off the Suitability Form in the NI logbook

The final assessment in the DP training scheme is referent to the suitability of the DP candidate to keep a DP watch in the vessel. This assessment is to be made by the Master of the vessel at the time the candidate completes all preceding phases. The Nautical Institute recognises that the Master is most advantageously placed to make such an assessment. Please download the 'Guidance to Masters' document for reference.
